Border Workshop   Tired of sewing long strips on your quilts and not sure what else to use?  Are you ready to put some sparkle into your  borders?  Border Crossings, our sample class, gave you a look at the theory behind border design.  In this hands-on workshop, you will go into your stash of fabrics and make some practice projects.  You can work in the round robin style or create a border sampler as shown on the Supply List page.  Carol Miller will show you more than a dozen different borders that will add the perfect finishing touch to your quilts.  Learn what works and why.  You should be comfortable with normal rotary cutting and sewing basic shapes, such as the half square triangle.  Four Lessons.  See Supply List for outline and more pictures.
$36     [credit card only]   Class starts August 30.

Lesson One opens on August 30; Lesson Two, September 6; Lesson Three, September 13; and Lesson Four, September 20.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on October 11.

Pieced Celtic Magic   Are you fascinated by the intricate knotwork in Celtic Designs but appliqué just isn't your thing?  Karen Combs felt the same way and set out to create these designs using piecing techniques instead.  Now she can teach you to design your own Celtic quilt using only two simple pieced blocks.  Lesson Two covers value, color and the optical illusion of transparency.  Lesson Three concentrates on choosing the size of your quilt and learning how to design your own cutting plan and fabric needs.  Lesson Four will take you through the construction of your original quilt and show you some quilting options.  Once you have completed your quilt, only you will know how easy it was.  This class is offered once a year.  Skill level: You need to be comfortable with rotary cutting and machine piecing. Four Lessons. See Supply List.

See Supply List.  You can also see student pictures in the Gallery.

Starting From Scratch   Have you wanted to learn to quilt but were daunted by long supply lists?  Are you lost when the instructions tell you  to buy 2 lights, 2 mediums and 2 darks?  This class is for you!  It is a soup-to-nuts approach to quilting for the absolute beginner.  Carol Miller will teach you how to buy your tools, how to select your fabric, which patterns to use and how to size them.  The class is geared toward making your quilt top with a rotary cutter and a sewing machine, but some hand piecing instruction is included and much of the information is the same for either method.  The quilting at the end of class will be by hand.  You will learn the basic square, half square, flying geese, and quick-pieced 4-patch units.  Students will then make a medium square or a lap quilt, using the two basic blocks learned in class.  Variations will be included.  Instructions will take you through the batting, hand quilting and binding.  You CAN learn to quilt!  Six Lessons.  There will be an extra week between Lessons Four and Five, so you will have plenty of time to complete your blocks.  See Supply List for more details.

Broken Star   Whether you call it Broken Star, Blazing Star or Star of Bethlehem, this is one impressive looking quilt.  The first one Nyla Morrison made was done with templates and all by hand.  Fortunately, rotary cutting and strip piecing have speeded up that process.  You can make this eye-popping design and you will be surprised how simple it is.  From a wall hanging to a king size quilt, just adjust the size of the strip you cut!  What could be easier?  If you have never worked with diamonds, this is your chance to learn the secrets of cutting accurate diamonds and then piecing them.  Four Lessons.  Adventuresome beginner.  Lessons are spaced two weeks apart to allow time for sewing.  See Supply List and Gallery for more photos.
