Quilting and Surface Embellishment

Digital Fabric Printing   Question: What is more fun than a trip to a new fabric store?  Answer: Making your very own fabric.  You can do it and no experience is required.  In this technique and design class, Lily Kerns will take you from printing photographs on fabric to creating your own repetitive designs and printing them with your inkjet printer.  With the availability of printer-ready fabric and better inks, quilters can now create custom-designed fabrics.  This class will take you far beyond memory quilts and labels into your own world of unique fabrics for new or traditional quilt making.  Level: you should be comfortable with your computer and printer.  You will need plenty of color ink and treated fabric sheets.  Four Lessons.  See Supply List.
$36         Class starts September 20.

Lesson One opens on September 20; Lesson Two, September 27; Lesson Three, October 4; and Lesson Four on October 11. Once a lesson opens, it remains available until your classroom closes on November 1.

Machine Quilting can be a quick way to finish a project or just as elaborate and detailed as hand quilting.  Carol Miller will take you  through the basic machine quilting techniques, including both free motion and straight line designs.  You will learn when to use the even feed foot and how different types of batting affect the way your quilting will look.  We will discuss basting for machine quilting, marking the design and deciding which designs are appropriate where.  Your homework will be a practice piece which you can turn into a table runner if you like or just keep as a handy reference.  Four Lessons.  All skill levels as long as you are comfortable with your sewing machine.  See Supply List.

Dyeing and Painting

Cotton Dyeing Basics   Calling all fabric stashers and hand-dyed fabric fans!  Time for you to learn how to dye your own cotton colors for your quilting, crafting or hoarding.  Everyone is welcome from the super-beginner to those who have played around with dyes, but need some professional guidance and instruction.  Fabric designer and hand dyeing expert Marjie McWilliams will teach you to make solid colors, mottled colors, color gradations and the colors of the spectrum, found on a traditional color wheel.  For best results, a minimum room temperature of 65º F throughout the dyeing process is recommended.  Warmer is even better!  Five Lessons.  All levels.  See Supply List.
$45        Class starts September 6.

Lesson One opens on September 6; Lesson Two, September 13; Lesson Three, September 20; Lesson Four, September 27; and Lesson Five, October 4.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on October 25.

Batik It!   Are you ready for an adventure?  Need those artistic juices stirred up a bit?  Did you even know that you HAVE artistic juices?  Well  you do and Marjie McWilliams will get them flowing!  Batik is the ancient Javanese process of applying hot wax to fabric.  The fabric is then dyed, causing the places that are covered in wax to resist the dye while the exposed areas receive the marvelous color.  The process continues by adding another layer of wax and another layer of dye until the piece is complete.  When the wax comes off, the veil of mystery is removed and a beautiful, one of a kind piece of fabric is ours to quilt, sew, hang or drape.  You will learn the basics of the batik process.  Join us if you are a super-beginner or a pro interested in learning new things about color and design.  Go with the Flow!  For best results, a minimal room temperature of 65 degrees F throughout the dyeing process is recommended.  Four Lessons.  See Supply List

Lesson One opens on September 27; Lesson Two, October 4; Lesson Three, October 11; and Lesson Four, October 18.  Once a lesson opens, it remains available until this classroom closes on November 8.
